A Moment of Holiness

Keep in mind that while I am writing this, Madelynne is sitting on the coffee table and alternately bouncing up and down.  Belle is curled up in the armchair with all of her baby dolls and we’re watching Miracle on 34th Street.  They’re not screaming, fighting, or doing exactly what they’ve been asked to do.  But it’s enough that they’re quiet and (hopefully) not waking up Amelia.

I haven’t taken enough moments this Christmas. Enough breaths to be thankful and thoughtful.  But I am reminded every time I have to leave my baking or my dishes or my piles and piles of laundry so that I can rock my baby to sleep just how blessed I am.

There’s something about having a new baby at Christmas that causes me to ponder even more that miracle God worked in the life of a young girl.  When I’m holding her and marveling at the innocence and perfection she has been given, I wonder what Mary must have thought in those first months of Jesus’ life.  Did she rock him to sleep?  Did she sometimes wish she didn’t have to stop in the middle of a chore that has to be done so she could attend to his cry?  Did she thank God for forcing her to slow down and just hold her baby?

Today I did.  And I pray that in the days to come I will pause more to see the holiness that is all around me.

Merry Christmas….from our chaos to yours.  Peace be with you this Christmas and always.

North Pole Delivery

We had a special delivery yesterday.  It came all the way from the North Pole (via the flood zone that is now southern Utah).

Elf 1 and Elf 2 (along with their sidekick Elf 2.5) have been busy making sure all of Santa’s deliveries arrive on time and spread Christmas cheer to stressed mommies in the foothills and the lowcountry.  While I haven’t discussed the contents of the package delivered to the Stephens family, I did document a bit of our opening so the elves could share in our excitement that Christmas is only THREE days away!

Christmas · Top 2 Tuesday

(Late) Top 2 Tuesday

So I’m a little late with this week’s Top 2 Tuesday post but better late than never, right?  I mean, after all, it’s the thought that counts.  Best intentions and all….I could go on like this forever.

Moving on.

This week’s top 2 Tuesday is favorite Christmas memories which is hard because I have been blessed with a lot of wonderful Christmas memories (and that’s something I need to remember more often).

My first is from my growing up years in the Granite Capitol.  My home church has a Christmas Eve candlelight service every year and we always went.  I remember being a child on the pew between my fidgity brother and squirmy sister who always managed to settle down just as the flames began to glow all around the sanctuary and Tom Wilhite sang “Sweet Little Jesus Boy.”  The first Christmas he was singing that in Heaven instead of First Baptist, a recording of him singing that old spiritual was played.  Some things are more than tradition.

It seemed everyone I ever knew from that church came home for the service and I remember dreaming of the day I’d bring my own babies to church on Christmas Eve to sit proudly beside their grandparents.  Madelynne’s first Christmas she was dressed to the nines and sat proudly (and sleepily) in the crook of her granddaddy’s arm for the service.  Now, we take my little girls to our church for the candlelight service.  I hope someday it’s a memory they’ll treasure.

My second favorite memory is more recent, but still has it’s roots in my childhood.  We don’t always celebrate on Christmas Eve or Day with my family anymore because trying to schedule three married children, two teenagers, and two twenty-somethings is more than even google calendar can handle.  But whenever we do finally get together there always comes a time when we get settled around the big fireplace and the giant Frasier fir, when Daddy’s drinking coffee and Mama’s rubbing her feet because she’s been cooking since dawn, when the grandbabies are finally sleeping and Audrey’s turned off her cell phone, and we start to talk about all those other Christmases.

The tree that was so big Daddy had to cut it apart to get it out of the house.

The time Corey got a puppy and Mama tricked him by hiding the little fur ball in her KitchenAid mixer box.

The time we opened a great big huge box to find nothing but Mickey Mouse ears and a guessing game which was answered with “Disney World!”

For a brief time, no one is fighting or complaining.  There’s no drama and no tempers.  It’s our own little world of Christmas Peace, a moment I could hold onto forever.

amelia

Already?

Amelia is ten months old today.  Seems impossible that I can so keenly remember much of this time last year and yet can’t imagine that there was a time she wasn’t part of our life.

At ten months, she’s more baby than infant, more rambunctious than restful.  She’s more personality and less presentation.

Long gone are the quiet days of play on the floor or rocking in the swing.  Even the exersaucer has lots its simple wonder.

She’s a girl with a purpose and a mind to get what she wants.  Open dishwasher?  Straight under the kitchen table is the fastest route to get there.  Bored at dinner?  Dropping the juice cup a half-dozen times is sure to guarantee some attention from the sissies.  Not in the mood for a nap?  No problem with crying at periodic intervals for over an hour until exhaustion finally sets in.  Well, maybe she doesn’t always get what she wants.

She thinks her name is Millie-Moo (the danger of nicknames) and her sisters are the greatest.  She knows how to please (last night she said “granddad” to Joshua’s grandfather) and how to wave ‘bye.  She’ll problem solve to get that toy she wants, if her sisters will leave her alone long enough to do it. And she’s growing faster than I can sort through the hand-me-downs.  (17 lbs, 28″ at our last appt.)

She refuses to even try to utter ma-ma (or Mimi) and she likes to eat but prefers the ease of swallowing over chewing so a lot of near choking events occur during meal times.

Ten months is a big deal, a number closer to the big mark than this mommy is ready for.  If they could just stay little….

but then she sleeps a solid ten hours and I’m thankful some phases of babyhood are behind us.
