Random Acts of Snow

I really love snow days.  (Insert sigh of contentment.)

Sure the girls are getting a little cabin fever and folks seem a bit put out that school’s been cancelled again and I really don’t want to lose my entire February break because we already made vacation plans but snow days.  Ahhh.

It’s like Christmas break without all the stress and strain of go-here-do-this-get-that.  It’s just time to be.  To stay home and drink a second cup of coffee in my pajamas.  To play games at the kitchen table and put together puzzles.  To eat soup and grilled cheese for every meal. (not that we did that.)

Sure I could be worrying about how I’m going to make up a week of lost instruction in this time crunch before testing.  How I’m going to get all the extra laundry we’ve gone through taken care of.  How I’m going to have to figure out some more structure for summer because otherwise the girls are going to drive me crazy fighting. (which they intersperse with regular intervals of curling up in the arm chair together to watch cartoons.)

Snow days remind me that sometimes we all just need to slow down.  I hope yours was a gift and not an inconvenience.  I pray it was a reminder that sometimes being trapped at home with no agenda is the breather we all need. (sigh again)

Besides the bustle of normalcy will return all too soon.  And when it does, we’ll look back at these days with longing.

And thankfulness that rain boots were such a popular trend this year.

Versatile Monday?

Since you really don’t want to hear about how truly manic my life is going to be this week, you can hop on over to Black Tag Diaries and thank Julia for giving me this award.

Julia had the misfortune of moving away before we could really get to know each other, so in keeping with the rules of this award, I’m going to reveal some things any good friend of mine should really know….

Here’s the rules for acceptance of the Versatile Blogger Award:
1) Thank and link back to the blogger that gave you the award.
2) Share 7 things about yourself.
3) Pass the award on to 7 blogs you’ve recently discovered and enjoy.
4) Leave your recipients a note, telling them about the award.
~~~
Top 7 Random Facts:
1.  I am terrified of snakes, but “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” is my favorite short story to teach.
2.  My first job (after concessionaire at the local rec department) was DJ on the local radio stations.  I got play my favorite Garth Brooks’ songs and read the obituaries at 5 o’clock every afternoon.
3.  Speaking of Garth, I really, truly love country music.  Last year I taught a group of students who would randomly burst into the chorus of “Big Green Tractor” during 7th period.  And yes, I am aware of just how redneck and boonies that sounds.
4.  I didn’t drink until I turned 21 and discovered B1G1 margaritas at the Chili’s in Rome.
5.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is my favorite book.  Anne of Green Gables is a close second.  But Little House in the Big Woods is the first book I ever loved.  oh, and my girls were both Laura Ingalls for Halloween.
6.  It’s really important to me that we have dinner together most nights each week.  The girls help me set the table and Amelia throws her cup on the floor twenty times during the meal and Joshua teaches the girls vocabulary words like opussum for the letter ‘o’, so they can drive their teachers crazy.
7.  Some of you probably already know this but it’s always my most random fact and fitting for #7: I’m the oldest of 7 kids.  My mom says seven is the number of completeness.  I think she meant chaos.  But we wouldn’t have it any other way.
And now I’m passing this award to some of my favorite folks:
1.  Laura who updates Garrett News
2.  Melissa who is Completely Eclipsed
3.  Nikole with her Happy Simple Life
4.  Calley who has Sporadic Moments (warning: this is my sister and she says it’s adult content, that means she doesn’t have a very broad vocabulary)
5.  Abigail who runs The Washington Post
6.  Kim of The Reed Family
7.   Kristin who is the voice of Ryan & Kristin
Happy Blogging!
Falling for Thankful Thursday
I. Love. Fall.
 It’s my favorite season and this week it’s like the autumn fairies in Belle’s Tinkerbell movie have finally dusted our little corner of God’s country with red and gold.
Even though it’s been almost 80 all week.  And humid.  And rainy.  It’s fall.  I drive home on the little winding country backroads and see the kind of picturesque settings found on postcards or Thomas Kincaide paintings or screen savers.  (yeah, I know that’s totally random, but I have a screen saver with the most gorgeous and soothing pictures on my computer at school.)
So, naturally this Thursday, I’m thankful for fall and all it’s glorious splendor.  And I’m thankful to have three sweet girls who also love…
pumpkins and quirky gourds
hot cider and sugar cookies
hayrides and corn mazes
mums and scarecrows
raking up leaves just to jump
twilight stillness
just cool enough for a scarf
and boots
storing up memories for winter…
Do you know which baby girl this is in the pumpkin bucket?
Thankful Thursday
I’m so thankful it’s Thursday because that means tomorrow is Friday and that means the weekend is here!
So, maybe I’ll have time to catch my breath before things get all crazy again, or maybe I’ll at least have the chance to be thankful that my life is full of crazy random
rehearsals and tap shoes and bottles and group work and laundry and pumpkins and Lucky Charms and chapstick and pacifiers and lunchboxes.
It’s the little things.
