What I Miss Most When I’m Not Local {31 Days: Day 21}

Of course I miss my kids when I’m gone.  And my husband.  All that goes without saying.

But what I really miss about my local and the place I call home and the region I belong to through community and culture and choice?

Sweet tea.

I mean, seriously, can we get some of that north of the Mason-Dixon line?

Southern Sweet Tea

3-4 Family Size Lipton Teabags (yes, brand matters)
1 cup sugar
empty gallon pitcher
medium pot
cold water

Fill pot with cold tap water and add tea bags.  Place pot on stove and bring to a boil.  Remove from heat.  Allow tea to steep 10-15 minutes.  Meanwhile, add one cup sugar to an empty gallon pitcher. Pour tea over sugar and stir to dissolve.  Run more cold water over tea bags in empty pot and then press the bags to release any extra tea goodness.  Pour into pitcher until full. Stir.  Fill a glass with ice. Pour a glass of tea. Relax and be thankful for the house wine of the South.

Sweet Tea Traditions has a good recipe here with more details.

Farm Friday {31 Days: Day 18}

So last week we went to the farm. It’s way cool to visit the place that delivered our vegetables all summer.

Even though we never had a zucchini like this!

We saw the chickens too. Some chickens lay eggs. Some chickens lay down in frying pans.

We met some horses.

We had lunch by the river and a hayride behind the tractor.

We decided not to pick anymore chili peppers but we did get some end of season squash, eggplant, and zucchini.

Thank you Chris and Heidi for the best farm day ever!

Being Brave and Leaving Local {31 Days: Day 17}

Because sometimes you have to pack four days worth of cute clothes, including that top you don’t dare wear around the baby with peanut butter hands, into a carry on bag that meets FDA requirements for height and weight.

You have to fill the travel size toiletry bottles with your favorite shampoo and debate on taking the curling iron tucked in next to the ipad charger and your favorite pajamas that hopefully aren’t too ratty for sharing a room with three other women.

You have to arrange and rearrange for the childcare and the school pick ups and the lunchboxes to be packed with the correct sandwiches for each child and then you have to load yourself on a van and sit back and breathe and trust that someone else can handle your life for the next 72 hours.

You have to be brave and bold and bear the burden of guilt that comes with anytime you step out in faith to do something that is really just for the betterment of yourself–

and for the ministry for which you are the helm.

Better moms make a better world.

Sometimes you have to leave that little slice of local behind to find what makes you worthy of being a leader.

Pray for me as the Steering Team for our local MOPS group travels to #momcon2013 in Kansas City this week!
