Tuesday Timeout

I’m getting on a roll thanks to my 30 Blog Challenge, but I’m not promising that every day will have its own blog!  But after yesterday’s post, I thought I would reassure you all that today was much better.  Not as manic or frantic or frenzied.

This morning I took some advice from Madeline L’Engle’s Walking on Water and took some time just “to be.”  I had coffee and my quiet time and some sweet nursing with Amelia who was kind enough NOT to wake prior to 5 a.m.  School was productive and Madelynne and I were headed home for some organization of the new furniture when I got the call.

Amelia is sick.  You know.  Sick.  Every year we find ourselves the victim of stomach bugs within the first month of school and Belle is usually the first to fall.  Guess she’s passed that torch to her baby sister. So this means I get to forget my to-do list and my lesson plans and my Wednesday routine to stay home and take care of my baby.

Which is how it should be…..but this is not the time out I was hoping for!

Random Acts of…Aunts

Amelia’s reaction to her aunt’s new art…all captions courtesy of my mama.

Oh, boy, pictures!
What, Mama, you want me to look at a picture of Aunt Calley’s new tattoo?
Oh, Aunt Calley….
What were you thinking?
This is Calley’s new tattoo.  She loves music and the sentiment of mixed tapes.  She is not a fan of strapless dresses, conservatism, or her sisters’ opinions.  Actually, she was trying to distract from the chaos of our other sisters lives.  Love you Calley!

Where Did Summer Go?

It’s officially over.  According to the school calendar that is.  Summer….where did you go?

Oh, that’s right.  You went to Harbor Island where the girls got a quick beach fix and Amelia learned to hold her head up like a little turtle.

You invited Hailey and Audrey to visit for a week at Saddle Ridge Ranch.

You taught Madelynne and Belle to swim and Amelia to roll.

You celebrated Daddy’s big 3-0 and Amelia’s first cereal.

You got your Twilight fix with Eclipse and the big girls (but no pictures)!

You camped at the lake even though it was hot, hot, hot!

You celebrated a special anniversary with special friends and a special night of fancy dinner and the fancy Fox Theatre (but again, no pictures).

You panned for gold and gems and bought Daddy a truck.

You stole the Munchkin scene in The Wizard of Oz for two weekends in a row.

And in between you found time to go to the dentist (not so fun), work out at Jazzercise enough to earn flip flops (pretty fun), tube the “mighty ‘Hooch” with Aunt Brooke (lots of fun), and play with your friends at the water park (the most fun).

And while all this was going on, you were letting my girls get bigger right before my eyes.  Now those pictures from early June show preschoolers with shorter hair and shorter legs.  This week they became school girls ready for Kindergarten and Pre-K, independent and a bit sassy, but still sweet and lovable.  They may have darker tans, longer hair, and more inches between their shorts and their knees than Daddy would like, but they’re still my little girls.

And I already can’t wait for next summer!

Random Acts of…Month 5

I can’t believe Amelia is five months old today.  Seriously, forget time flies.  I think it transports like in an episode of Star Trek.  I mean, really?  My sweet baby is five months old already?  I feel like we just left the hospital still shaking our heads over the fact that she’s a girl and not the boy everyone (but Mary Lynn) thought we were having.

At five months, Amelia is full of personality and spirit.  For the most part she’s pretty laid back, content to go with the flow and remain limp when being flopped around like a rag doll.  She’s a hearty eater and is now enjoying oatmeal with breakfast and rice cereal with dinner.  She also got a taste of formula recently when Joshua and I had a big date and I hadn’t pumped enough.  We’re working toward a schedule that will transition us into the new school year all too soon, and she has finally started sleeping throught the night.

But I still wish I could turn back time for just a few hours and go back to those first couple weeks she was home and I would sit on the couch and nurse her and hold her and marvel at how beautiful and perfect she is.  Already she’s over quiet cuddle time with Mommy and prefers to assert her new found ability to sit up when I’m holding her and she talks and squeals and grunts loud enough to be heard over her sisters.

Isn’t it amazing what five months can do?
