Requests

As most of you know I teach school.  Middle school.  Seventh grade.  Hormones with feet.

So I spend most of my day trying to honor requests.  Requests to go to the bathroom.  To the nurse.  To lockers.  To home.  Request for more time.  Less homework.  Easier assignments.

Lots of times, I can’t honor these requests, so I as a result, I spend a lot of my day saying things like, “No, you can’t wear your rebel flag hat with a fish hook on it in the building during school.” Or, “No, you can’t do your math homework while I’m trying to teach you about theme in literature.”

But Madelynne made a request today I think I can honor.  And hopefully it will be fulfilled someday soon.

As most of you also know, we’re in the hunt for a new house.  The only flaw in this is we have to sell our charming little ranch first.  Madelynne is very into voicing her opinions on the kind of house we choose.  From the beginning, she has wanted stairs.  And today she clarified that request.

“Mommy, I want a house with stairs.  Stairs that go up.”

Finally, a request I can make happen, no problem!

In the Middle

Do you ever wonder where some of these games and rhymes kids learn from each other in school got their start?  Isn’t it interesting how they pass from kid to kid and are a constant of the school playground no matter that my girls are part of techno-generation Z (or whatever it is)?

Today on the way home from Mimi’s, Madelynne was in the backseat teaching Annabelle a classic: “Up high” (and they would high five above their heads), “Down low” (and they would smack each other down by their car seats) “in the middle–too slow!” At this point Madelynne would jerk her hands away and laugh hysterically at her little sister who just doesn’t quite get why this is so funny.

Poor Belle. That middle’s a tough spot.

Manic Monday

Do you know that twelve year olds don’t know this song?  I referenced it today while I was giving report cards to the girls who missed homeroom on Friday and were waiting on me when I got to school at 7:48 (that would be 18 minutes AFTER I was supposed to be there).  They looked at me like I was crazy for nearly breaking into a chorus of “it’s just another manic monday” when I was explaining that I was late because I had dumped coffee all over myself while I was driving and it necessitated a return home for a new outfit.

Welcome to Monday.

I did get a few laughs today, though.  Madelynne is learning her contact information at school and we’ve been practicing since she got off the bus this afternoon.  But she’s having a little trouble remembering it, so tonight when Joshua asked her what her phone number was, she just looked at him like he was crazy and said, “It’s the same as yours.”  duh.

See you Tuesday.

Random Madelynne-isms

My Madelynne has been quite the expert on all things recently.  I definitely wish the world was as easy to run as she believes, or even that I have as much power as she thinks I do.

On the way home from school Friday she informed me that if I would just send all my kids to the principal’s office when they “move their clip to red-plus” I would have “a lot more fun at school.”  Ah, if only it were that easy.  If only they hadn’t stopped moving clips in about third grade maybe they would remember how to behave.

On Saturday night we ventured over to a local Corn Maze that she had received a free ticket for at school.  Unfortunately, Saturday nights are haunted at this particular field, and it is “super scary” according to the chick selling tickets who was a recent student of one of my colleagues, I’m sure.  When I asked for clarification on “super scary” and was told about the chainsaws that chase people, we turned around to head back home.  Needless to say we had two disappointed little girls and a disinterested infant.  In the parking lot (loose term for next field over), we ran into several other families we know who had also turned back at the mention of scare tactics that should not be used on anyone but especially six year olds.  While the adults discussed how the folks should really do a better job of advertising the haunted aspect, Madelynne tried to talk everyone into letting her go back.  She must have overheard my discussion with one of the ladies who teaches with me, because she informed me that if “that maze was full of your kids, Mommy, then you should be able to tell them to leave us alone!”  Apparently she doesn’t realize how much teenagers would relish the idea of scaring their teacher to death.

She’s just full of wisdom…and sass.  She had to move her clip to yellow the other day.  According to her it’s because “Mrs. Washington never notices me being good!”  Well, Madelynne baby, I don’t know if I believe that because you’re pretty hard to miss.

Random Mornings

You know there are some things I really like about early mornings.  Like

…the smell of coffee.
…the mist over the football field at school.
…Annabelle’s disheveled hair.
…sunrise when it’s all orange and pink and gold.
…the quiet and stillness before everyone and everything really wakes up and gets going.

But I’m getting worn out greeting every morning before the crack of dawn.  I’m sure everyone on our connector flight to Charlotte at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning is just going to love that our baby is a morning person.  Not only is she an early riser, she’s one of those annoyingly chipper morning people who want to play and laugh and engage in activities generally reserved for late afternoon.  Or at least post-coffee.

Joshua blames me because I don’t see the point in letting her “cry it out” when I have to get up in thirty minutes anyway (and by have to I really mean should because it will give me more time to enjoy the things on that list above).

I blame him.  I have good reason for this.  He’s always been a morning person.  You know, one of those who likes to get to work early to get everything done before they’re even on the clock kind of people.  He has passed this trait down to Annabelle who sweetly gets up each morning and gets dressed and comes to play with Amelia who also, apparently, has this……gift.  Yeah, that’s a nice way to put it.

Thank goodness for Madelynne.  At least I have one child who knows the value of sleeping in.

After all, those morning things are good but the rest of the day has benefits, too.  We’ll see if I stay awake to enjoy it.
