Mothering Mania

I think we’re heading into overdrive for the next couple of weeks.  School starts in sixteen short days and we haven’t been to the water park, books are coming overdue at the library, and the state park pass needs to hang on the rearview a few more times.

The van somehow needs to hold our camping gear, four children and their bicycles, and Gus’s travel swing next week when we head up to NC for a few days.

The laundry is a never-ending cycle and until today, I was on a cooking hiatus.  There’s just something about summer that doesn’t scream casserole.

It’s more of a “let’s just eat sandwiches at a picnic table after we hike a mountain” kind of season.

I love sandwiches with a garden fresh tomato.  I never really got the difference until I grew my own.  Amelia and I picked a bowlful of big red beauties today.

Yesterday we had a big girl day.  We bought new shoes and socks and headbands and bookbags and Annabelle said, “I think tomorrow we should stay home and not spend any more money.”

Most definitely.

We’ve been to the new dentist.  They weren’t happy about switching but insurance is a luxury you just can’t toss aside.

The flat screen tv was winning them over until Madelynne had to have a tooth pulled.  Infected since the permanent was coming in where a baby still was.  And she has to go back in a couple of days to have another one take care of and a filling.  Apparently, enamel is an afterthought for her teeth.

Annabelle is cavity free, but she’s the one I have to inspect each morning because she hates to brush.  So how does this mama explain the fairness of that?  Or that the tooth fairy must have been confused that Madelynne switched rooms because she forgot to come!  Tragedy.

MOPS is gearing up and my to-do list is a mile long and I must beg the question of why I do these things to myself?

The wall behind the computer is covered in diaper points stickers I haven’t entered in a month and today for the first time ever Amelia fought me about taking a nap.

Mothering is mania.  It’s full-out all the time and sometimes I just want a minute to catch my breath.  Sometimes I just need a moment to look at the tangle of brown arms and legs and indistinguishable heads that cover my couch and remember why I let myself be run ragged by this time every summer.

I’m tired of the little arguments and the emotional meltdowns and the constant running in the kitchen that makes me dizzy but I’m not tired of swimming at the gorge or playing at the park or filling up the plastic pool.

It’s mania, but it’s blessings.

Those Perfect Moments

When you’re a mom
especially a mom of
rowdy
rambunctious
rough
little girls
and just one sweet tiny boy
it’s easy to get caught up
in the moments that are hard.
I posted that last week
so this week
I thought I’d share that
in life
in motherhood
there are plenty of
perfect moments
fleeting and quick
but if I could just freeze
this time
I would.

one.
Madelynne all curled up in our armchair reading chapter books all by herself ignoring the chaos around her until her baby sis climbs up too.

two.
The noisy baby napping nearby who grunts and sighs and purrs non-stop when I am trying to nap but who curls into my chest and is quiet as can be.

three.
When Amelia wakes up her hair is everywhere all swirls and curls and sweetness.

four.
Just one day when we all got along (mostly) and I reinstated some confidence in myself.

five.
Handfuls of not-quite-ripe blackberries they and their favorite boy friends are picking off the bushes.

six.
Dishwasher humming, dryer thumping, crockpot bubbling, babies all at rest.
and big girls at art camp 🙂

seven.
Long nursing sessions when we’re just both so content.

eight.
Eight little feet that will bring the Good News
we pray.

nine.
Clutching her “star bucks” Annabelle says, “Mommy, did you know the library has a room where you can buy stuff?”  The library is our new favorite summer place.

ten.
Trying for a perfect moment sometimes gets you one better.
It may not have been the original vision, but it’s ours.

See: 5 Minute Friday

What do you see?

I see my two big girls, my first attempts at mothering, my inability to fix their hair incredibly cute on this last day of school.

I see Annabelle is tall enough to wear the dress Madelynne wore the first day and Madelynne is forcing that smile because she was irritated I would take their picture but wouldn’t drive them.

I see how much they’ve been through this year.

Such a big year for such little people.

A mommy who couldn’t quite get it together but is trying so hard.  A new brother who was so unexpected and such a blessing.  A change in lifestyle.  More of the words “we just can’t afford that” and less of the giving in.

I don’t think I’ve scarred them.  If I have, I don’t see it.

Instead I see hope for the future.  Another chance to help make the world a little better, brighter, sweeter.

They’ve completed kindergarten and first grade and so soon this picture will be caps and gowns and sequins and tiaras.

I’ll take the hand me down dress and forced smile.

Top 10: What I Do All Day

I’m a little bit already on a blog hiatus.  It’s because when I sit up, like in this computer chair, this baby protests.  He protests lying down, too, but he tolerates it more between the hours of 1 and 3 p.m. than he does between 1 and 3 a.m., so I’ve been doing a lot more napping.  But I’ve got a few posts tucked in my head for moments I want to remember before I’m a mother of four and one of them is this Top 10.

Awhile back, I wrote about my “done list”.  It’s much better than a “to-do” list because it’s a list of all I’ve actually accomplished in that day and makes me feel a little more justified about being home with my toddler (the fact that I think I need justification is a whole other post I’ve got rolling around and will get to at some point).  Often, my husband will ask, “What did you and Amelia do today?”  Never in a sarcastic way that implies he can’t believe the house is a wreck and dinner’s not ready, but in a curious, he’d really like to know kind of way.  So here’s a bit of insight into my daily grind with one.  I’m sure there will be an addendum to this once I’m home with toddler, newborn, and big sisters on summer vacation.

One.
I try to keep the house neat and organized.

See how she’s sorting books?
Two.
When I can’t keep up with #1, I bring in reinforcements.
i.e. We babysit for our friends in exchange for free labor.
Two year olds are excellent at dusting with the baby wipes they pull out by the handful.

Three.
I plan a lot of meals that appeal to my family.
Like chocolate.

And homemade pizza.

Four.
I clip coupons and plan grocery trips that require bribery with suckers.
Five.
I appraise a lot of really fine art.

Six.
I enforce rules.
Such as “no eating off the floor because I’d rather clean the couch.”

Seven.
I make incredible Food Network worthy lunches.
Then I coerce picky toddlers into eating.
Eight.
I referee these three hoodlums.
Nine.
I listen to great stories about school.
As in, who moved their card (not Annabelle)
the “copper” snake on the playground
and why lunch was no good today.
Ten.
As CEO of a small, but productive, company, I revel everyday in the fact that this is my personal assistant.

Is she ready to take on more job responsibility as a big sister?
I sure hope so!
