Miscellany Monday Meets Project 52

Disclaimer: Don’t read any further if you’re counting carbs or watching calories.

I obviously don’t believe in either of those activities since I’m overly pleased with my Pioneer Woman Chicken and Dumplings that capped off our crazy week 52.12.

It was cold and rainy all weekend, but inside the chocolate factory of Willy Wonka all was pure imagination.  Our annual middle school spring musical was a great success, though I must say I’m pretty partial to the performance of two little squirrels, myself.

But afternoon rehearsals make for long days and tired kids (and mommies).  So today, instead of trying to get my own routine back at Jazzercise, I opted for home and the couch and an afternoon mug of hazelnut coffee to ward off the late March chill.  It turned cold Friday and Joshua fussed when I turned the heat back on.  But poor Amelia, her lips were blue!

We think we (and by we I mean our wonderful family doc) have figured out the problem with Amelia’s thumb.  Looks like “trigger thumb” which is actually a congenital defect that may require surgery.  Normally, I’d be freaking out by now, but in the midst of all that’s happened in our lives lately and in comparison to the tragedies of Japan, it seems a small, fixable nuisance.  I’m sure I’ll be singing a different song if surgery actually becomes a reality, but for now I’m reveling in blessed assurance that Jesus is holding that sweet little hand, bent thumb and all.

See how her left thumb is bent?  It stays like that all the time, but it doesn’t hinder her–especially when food is anywhere near.

Miscellany Monday

Today is Monday.
It was okay.
Sunshine in the evening for a walk, but the girls wanted to know why we were going to school in the dark.
Play rehearsal.
I’m not feeling the Golden Ticket yet, but that’s always the case a week before production, yet somehow, voila! It all comes together.  And nobody has a mental breakdown.
But I might get close next week, so don’t be surprised if I lay low in blogland.
Cleaned the bathroom tonight.  Flylady said just the countertops, but that made the toilet feel left out and since it’s apparently Amelia’s latest fascination, I had to clean that too.  Oh, and the mirror.  And I swept the floor and put down a clean bathmat.  I HATE cleaning the bathroom.  How can a place that is supposed to make you clean get so grimy?
And what’s up with gunk on the ice dispenser tray?  I mean, come on, it’s ice.  That’s just water.
Joshua says you can’t leave water unattended.  You never know what it will get up to.  Sort of like a class of seventh graders who beat me back to the classroom after lunch.
Speaking of 7th graders, is it their goal to make me feel bad in the last quarter of my career?
Really, I don’t need to know that you made a good grade on your final because you just “guessed”.  Plus I don’t believe you.  Surely some knowledge seeped into your brain at some point in the past 130 days.  Please, let’s hope so.
That’s it for today.

Miscellany Monday

One.
I stepped on something last week.  I suspect it was a tiny shard of glass courtesy of the applesauce jar Madeynne dropped in the carport.  Whatever it was, it has left me with a stabbing pain in my big toe that is getting worse and is now swollen.  Actually, it’s not as bad as I’m making it out to be, but it is rather annoying to think there may be glass stuck in my toe.
Two.
Madelynne is auditioning for the talent show at her elementary school tomorrow.  That’s right, auditioning.  She has ten minute time slot and a schedule.  She may not get it.  She does not understand this because everytime she’s ever had to audition, she’s been put in the show.  Now here’s the best part: Her talent is arranging her stuffed animals in a circle and then reading to them while pretending to be her kindergarten teacher at story time.  She was practicing today and all was going well until the teddy bears started biting each other and Annabelle (who was her teacher’s aide) had to take them to the office.  Madelynne moved their clips to “red plus” also.  It was a rough evening for Little Miss Brackett’s class of inanimate objects.
Three.
I need some new recipes.  I’m bored by all of our standbys and really need to spice up the menus around here.  Any good suggestions?  What’s your favorite meal for a busy mama to make in less than 30  minutes while distracting the baby, answering the phone, and refereeing the teachers of the inanimate objects?
Happy Monday!

Miscellany Monday

Got the button to work! I had to download it to my desktop and add it as an image, but yay!  So anyway…on to the miscellaneous of manic Mondays.

One.
If there is cardboard over your passenger side window, it’s darn near impossible to turn left.  And if you’re relying on a six year old to tell you if a car is coming, well, let’s just say it’s a bit scary.
Two.
Having a mechanic in the family is way more convenient than having a teacher.  My brother will be coming tomorrow to (hopefully) fix the window problem.  And I will never take car windows for granted again.
Three.
My blog is under construction.  I was going to leave it alone until summer when I have more time to really focus on adding some more gadget-y button-y things that I will solicit help with immediately, but I got interested in something different.  I blame Kim because blogging is a great way to avoid the laundry.
Four.
Speaking of laundry, you can click on over to my sisters’ latest ventures and read all about Lavagirl and Shark Boy or the Prince of Zion.  But remember I was first.
Five.
I’m controlling my chaos (which I’ve learned is a syndrome) and am trying to keep the house clean in small increments.  But not while I’m blogging, see #3.  Thanks to April I checked out the crazy FLY Lady and once I navigated the foreign language, found some ideas that totally work for me, and guess what?  I realized I’m not that hopeless.  I was doing a lot of this (like cleaning hot zones for 15 minutes a day) already.   How do you clean so you don’t become a feature on TLC?
Six.
And as part of the great declutter cleanout redecorate livebetter deal I’ve got going on, I’m feeling more in control.  All you perfectionists out there are nodding along.  I don’t know why a clean sink and knowing I took one small bag of outgrown baby clothes out of the office makes me feel more settled, but it does.  Okay, so I know exactly why it makes me feel better, but how much psychoanalysis are you looking for right now?
Seven.
Is the number of completion.  Mama says that’s why there’s seven of us sibs.
So today I’m stopping the randomness right here, though I’ll leave you with this final question to ponder.
Today in my reading class we began to discuss that great Shakespearean tragedy of star-crossed love (I’m selling the boys on this by telling them it’s really all about sword fights).
I was asked, “So, is Romeo still alive?”
And that’s what reality tv has done to this generation.
Or maybe he was being deeply insightful and beginning a commentary on sacrificial love.
(even though I personally find R & J to be rather selfish)
Nah…he heard me mention the Leornardo Dicaprio version and figured anyone Mrs. Brackett thought was cute in high school had to be long gone by now.

For my eyes never saw true beauty til this night….

Miscellany Monday

So I’m really trying to figure out how to put the button for this link up on my actual post as opposed to the side, so any suggestions for that endeavor would be greatly appreciated since it is driving me crazy that I can’t figure this out.  I mean Molly figured it out.  And the button is cute.  And I like Carissa’s lowercase letters.  So why can’t I figure this out?

Rant over.

1.  I absolutely cannot wait for June.  Except I can because I don’t want to miss all these moments of my girls still being little.  Except I can’t because I am always overwhelmed and trying to do too much and I can’t wait to reduce that.  A friend advised me not to take on too much next year just because I’m staying home and folks think that means I have free time for more commitments.  Hello, commitments.  You are the reason I am going crazy.

2.  I am an overly controlling freak. Tonight I criticized the methods Joshua was using to make spaghetti.  Actually I just asked things like, Aren’t you going to wait until the water boils to add the pasta?  and Did you season the meat?  What I should have said was, Thanks for making dinner and it tastes delicious.  What possesses me to believe that I’m the only one who knows how to do things?

3.  If I keep griping like this no one is going to want to read my blog.  It’s rather depressing.

4.  My sister is rambling in my ear right now about her manic Monday trip to the doctor’s office with her kiddos.  She can’t understand why college sister (who lives with her) didn’t want to come and help.  She said Kelsey just sat in the house and enjoyed the quiet.  Well, I would have too.  Don’t tell Katy.

5.  Speaking of Kelsey, my niece called me the other night to tell me that Aunt Kelsey made soupy mac and cheese from the blue box and she didn’t eat it.  Kelsey said she made it in the microwave and what was the problem?

6.  I am dreaming of organizing and redecorating.  Now I need some tips on how not to overwhelm myself or spend gobs of money since I have a budget the size of an empty envelope.  Should I finish the living room or move on to the chaos of the office/storage room/bane of my house?  I’m at the point with so many projects in my head that I can’t even fathom where to begin on any of them.  Do you ever feel like that?

7.  I’m wondering how many people actually read this blog.  I’d love you to follow if you do.  And stay tuned because I’ve got big plans for this in a few months.

8.  Amelia’s birthday is two days before mine.  She needs nothing.  I think we should skip gifts for her and just get Mommy presents this year since last year I was un-acknowledged and it was a big one.  How selfish is that?

Katy is still talking to me.  She and Kelsey should not be left alone for too long.
