Miscellany Monday

One.
I stepped on something last week.  I suspect it was a tiny shard of glass courtesy of the applesauce jar Madeynne dropped in the carport.  Whatever it was, it has left me with a stabbing pain in my big toe that is getting worse and is now swollen.  Actually, it’s not as bad as I’m making it out to be, but it is rather annoying to think there may be glass stuck in my toe.
Two.
Madelynne is auditioning for the talent show at her elementary school tomorrow.  That’s right, auditioning.  She has ten minute time slot and a schedule.  She may not get it.  She does not understand this because everytime she’s ever had to audition, she’s been put in the show.  Now here’s the best part: Her talent is arranging her stuffed animals in a circle and then reading to them while pretending to be her kindergarten teacher at story time.  She was practicing today and all was going well until the teddy bears started biting each other and Annabelle (who was her teacher’s aide) had to take them to the office.  Madelynne moved their clips to “red plus” also.  It was a rough evening for Little Miss Brackett’s class of inanimate objects.
Three.
I need some new recipes.  I’m bored by all of our standbys and really need to spice up the menus around here.  Any good suggestions?  What’s your favorite meal for a busy mama to make in less than 30  minutes while distracting the baby, answering the phone, and refereeing the teachers of the inanimate objects?
Happy Monday!

Project 52.Something

Yeah, I did good for the first month.  But apparently after January was over, so was my discipline.

So here’s my attempt at reclaiming my weekly project of documenting the random days of our lives.

We’ve had a pretty down week.  It’s been busy with Joshua working late hours as the bank transitions to its new holding company and the girls and I are getting ready for the spring play at my school.

But this weekend, I was hit hard in the heart with a reminder that no matter how much I may hate the idea of my life changing because of his job, I am so blessed to be able to pack up my stuff…all that nonsense knick-knack brick-a-brack that makes our house our home.

Not that we’re packing just yet. But as I visited with our friends tonight who lost their entire home and both vehicles in a horrific fire yesterday morning, I’m definitely more grateful for my van with its chipping paint, my crooked kitchen cabinets, my sagging couch.  And I’m amazed by how quickly people will work to show others love and support when the physical structure of a life is gone.

Thank you, Lord, though, that it is never the physical structure that gives us our life, but rather the friends and family who are still standing no matter where you are.

Wow, long post for Project 52!  Here’s pics as promised!

Happy Birthday (again) to Amelia and Granddaddy.  We finally had her party this weekend.

That’s right, she’s eating more cake.

Where’s Amelia?

This girl loves her some birthday!

Amelia has seven aunts.  Aunt Calley and Aunt Alaina are the only ones who showed…we see how it is!

Playing with old friends.  I remember when these four used to all fit in the same bathtub!

thankful Thursday

Thankful Thursday

This Thursday….

I am thankful we got a paycheck.  Actually three.  One from the old bank.  One from the new.  And one for the nearly 30 hours of overtime he worked from Friday night to Monday night.  Silver lining.

I am thankful for co-workers who understand that it was in the best interest of my students that I take Wednesday off to hold Amelia while she got four shots.   Really, it was.  Because no one needs a teacher having a mental breakdown in the middle of a classroom of teenagers.

I am thankful for Joshua’s coworker who sends a big box home with him at the change of the seasons.  Inside is a plethera of clothes for me to sort through.  I keep what I want and return the rest.  The girls aren’t naked and Kim has less to tag for the consignment sale.  It’s definitely win-win.

If you haven’t checked out Julia (and how could you have not since I post about her all the time) go on over to Black Tag Diaries, link up, and be thankful.

Oh, and Julia, I stole your unofficial button because it (and you) are awesome 🙂

Because Nobody’s Perfect

Because I like to stalk Julia on a pretty regular basis, I get a lot of great ideas for blogs and link ups and I find lots of wonderful folks I enjoy following.

Folks who aren’t afraid to admit they don’t quite have it all together and that’s okay.

I definitely don’t have it together and I hope I’ve treated you to some of those moments over the past year.  The raw truth of it is sometimes I scream at my kids, lose it over the dirty laundry, and have to put myself in time out until I calm down and realize that life’s not about perfect moments.

Tonight’s imperfectly perfect snapshot?

It’s 8:06.  Six minutes past bedtime and they’re still watching a movie (102 Dalmations) that I’m not stopping ten minutes before the end because the whining is just not worth it.

The deal was they would fold their laundry while they watched.

Notice that this wasn’t done.  A perfect mom wouldn’t even have her kids folding laundry because she’d have had it done in the time I spent blogging about this.  Or she would have stopped the movie and enforced their end of the bargain.

Well, thank God I’m not perfect because otherwise I wouldn’t have chosen to stay at the kitchen table, sip coffee, check my email and listen to Annabelle say things like, “Madelynne, we would never steal puppies to bake them, would we?”

Well, let’s hope not 🙂

Capturing Motherhood..check her out and link up.  Let’s all be imperfect together.
Manic Monday

Miscellany Monday

1.
Today is my birthday and I cried for the first part of the morning and then ate a big ol’ piece of homemade carrot cake with layers of cream cheese icing and laughed at my friend’s retelling of her friend’s facebook status detailing the cult following mass suicide of all her aquarium fish.  So all in all, not a bad start to the day after all.
2.
Why is it that triple coupon week at Ingles is always the week that I have no grocery budget left for the month and then when I go to the trouble of trying to figure out which deals I can get for free or next to it, I go to my store and discover that the actual prices are not the sales prices quoted in my coupon matchup list.  Which is more of a commentary on the fact that small towns may be charming but they inconveniently only have one grocery store which means my store can charge whatever the heck they want and assume people will pay for it.
3.
My phone has been ringing constantly all day.  Or beeping with text messages.  And if my cell isn’t ringing, the house phone is.  I appreciate all the well wishes and the thoughtfulness and the simple fact that people have taken a few minutes to remember me today when they surely have so many other activities to focus on and I hope no one is offended that I left the phones on the kitchen table and went to take a long bubble bath and read a book.  It’s just that right now everything turns into consolation for the bank’s situation and all I really want to talk about is anything but that.  But then again, if no one called I’d be all mopey and woe is me, so I think I’ll just shut up about it.
4.
I’m reading this really great book right now, The Wednesday Sistershttp://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=random05a-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=0345502833&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr.  My mom brought it to me yesterday when she came to take me on our annual pilgrimage for my birthday pottery.  She likes to read books and then pass them along to me, which is great.  And free.
5.
I love that new GE commercial where everyone is country line dancing.  It’s the kind of silly randomness that makes me smile and think that sometimes advertisers are clever.
6.
I’ve decided to stop telling people I’m staying home with my kids next year because that’s not really true.  I’m staying home for my family, for my grandparents, for my sisters, but mostly for me.  It’s less of a time out from work and more of a career change.  It’s time for something different.
7.
My mom makes the best birthday cakes in the world.  My jeans are not going to fit by Friday.
