I Forgot

I forgot that when I’m at work all day that only leaves me a precious few hours at home.  Before I knew it today I had run errands, gone to Jazzercise, started dinner and realized the girls would be in bed soon and I had barely seen them.

This is why I quit cooking as much last fall and we began to enjoy canned soup and grilled cheese on a weekly basis.

Time just gets away so quickly and I don’t want to waste it.  These precious moments are flying by and I feel like I need to grab on and dig in my heels to slow life down.

My six year old has suddenly matured into a post-Christmas kindergartener who’s not so sure Santa is real and thinks she might be too big for baby dolls.  When did that happen?

Annabelle only wants to go to school if Hailey’s there but insists they do “nothing” all day.

Then there’s Millie Moo who can walk on her knees and will sit in the high chair for an hour as long as the food keeps coming.

Where did these babies go?

Weekend Wipeout

Here’s a brief glimpse of what’s been keeping us on our toes the past few days…and this doesn’t even include the participation of the cutest baby angel in the community theatre production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

Madelynne teaching Amelia to read.

There’s a reason Joshua’s granddad is wearing this hat…
..and Annabelle is dressed like a cow.

Ashley’s water broke on Saturday and we’re all waiting to hear the good news that baby Colton is safely here.  He’s taking his time…I think he’s scared to meet Big Daddy…or maybe he’s afraid Marmee is going to kidnap him and bring him back to Georgia!

In the Middle

Do you ever wonder where some of these games and rhymes kids learn from each other in school got their start?  Isn’t it interesting how they pass from kid to kid and are a constant of the school playground no matter that my girls are part of techno-generation Z (or whatever it is)?

Today on the way home from Mimi’s, Madelynne was in the backseat teaching Annabelle a classic: “Up high” (and they would high five above their heads), “Down low” (and they would smack each other down by their car seats) “in the middle–too slow!” At this point Madelynne would jerk her hands away and laugh hysterically at her little sister who just doesn’t quite get why this is so funny.

Poor Belle. That middle’s a tough spot.

Random Mornings

You know there are some things I really like about early mornings.  Like

…the smell of coffee.
…the mist over the football field at school.
…Annabelle’s disheveled hair.
…sunrise when it’s all orange and pink and gold.
…the quiet and stillness before everyone and everything really wakes up and gets going.

But I’m getting worn out greeting every morning before the crack of dawn.  I’m sure everyone on our connector flight to Charlotte at 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning is just going to love that our baby is a morning person.  Not only is she an early riser, she’s one of those annoyingly chipper morning people who want to play and laugh and engage in activities generally reserved for late afternoon.  Or at least post-coffee.

Joshua blames me because I don’t see the point in letting her “cry it out” when I have to get up in thirty minutes anyway (and by have to I really mean should because it will give me more time to enjoy the things on that list above).

I blame him.  I have good reason for this.  He’s always been a morning person.  You know, one of those who likes to get to work early to get everything done before they’re even on the clock kind of people.  He has passed this trait down to Annabelle who sweetly gets up each morning and gets dressed and comes to play with Amelia who also, apparently, has this……gift.  Yeah, that’s a nice way to put it.

Thank goodness for Madelynne.  At least I have one child who knows the value of sleeping in.

After all, those morning things are good but the rest of the day has benefits, too.  We’ll see if I stay awake to enjoy it.
